For this client, her closet had reached the point where it just wasn’t functioning the way she wanted it to anymore.
Getting dressed had started to feel more stressful and time-consuming, and it was becoming harder to find things and keep the space maintained over time. The closet had gradually become very full, leaving limited floor space, packed shelves, and very few open hanging spots available.
She was ready to finally go through everything, declutter the space, and create a closet that felt easier to use and maintain day to day.

The Before
As you can see, the closet was very full, with clothing, shoes, and other items taking up much of the available space. At this point, even simple tasks like getting dressed in the morning were becoming frustrating and time-consuming.
To tackle this closet project, she booked a two-organizer session with our team. Depending on the size of the closet, the amount of belongings, and how much a client wants to go through, we may recommend either one or two organizers for closet decluttering projects.
For this session, we focused on her side of the closet. Her side was very large and had enough items to go through that it would realistically take up the full session, so we wanted to prioritize the areas that felt the most overwhelming for her first.
Starting the Closet Decluttering Service
With larger closets, we try not to make the process feel overwhelming for clients. Instead of pulling everything out at once, we usually work category by category.
For this project, we started with shoes first, then moved into drawer items, followed by hanging clothing.
Why We Started With Shoes First
Every closet project is different, so we don’t always start in the same place. For this client, we began with shoes because they were taking up a significant amount of floor space and were one of the easier categories to decide on.
Starting with a simpler category helped build momentum and made the rest of the decluttering process feel less overwhelming. Once the shoes were sorted, it became much easier to move on to clothing and other belongings.
By working through one category at a time, we were able to keep the project organized and help our client make decisions without feeling overwhelmed.
During the session, we helped our client sort through clothing, shoes, and other items she no longer wore or needed. By the end of the appointment, she had parted with about five contractor bags’ worth of donations.
Why We Didn’t Empty the Entire Closet
One mistake many people make is pulling everything out of the closet at once. While that can work for smaller projects, it often leaves homeowners feeling overwhelmed in larger walk-in closets.
For this project, we worked category by category instead. This kept the process organized, made decisions feel more manageable, and allowed our client to see steady progress throughout the session.
Another reason we chose this approach was that the closet was part of a large primary suite.
Pulling everything out at once would have meant spreading clothing and other belongings into the bedroom, creating more back-and-forth trips between rooms and taking up valuable time during the session.
By working one category at a time, we were able to spend more of the appointment actually decluttering and organizing rather than moving piles of items around.
Organizing the Closet After Decluttering
Once we finished the decluttering portion of the session, we moved into organizing everything that was staying in the closet.
We grouped similar items, organized clothing by category, sorted items by type and color, and worked to make the space easier to maintain going forward. Our goal is never just to make a closet look nice for photos. We want the systems to actually function well for everyday life, too.
We focused on making the most of the available floor, shelf, and hanging space while keeping the layout practical and easy to maintain.

How Much She Decluttered from the Session
By the end of the five-hour session, our client had decided to part with approximately eight contractor bags’ worth of clothing and other items she no longer wanted or needed. While every closet project is different, removing this much allowed us to free up valuable hanging, shelf, and floor space.
The Final Result
The entire session lasted around five hours.
